Is ‘Now’ an illusion ?

Start living your life in the present. Forget the regrets about the past and anxieties about the future. Simply enjoy what’s happening now.time

These statements are something which we often hear. But my question is

“Does ‘present’ exist really?”

Say, you are reading this now.. In fact you are not.. Since light rays take a finite time to bounce from the letters to your eye. Since the difference is infinitesimally small, one cannot recognize it.  So when you read a word, you are reading it as it looked sometime in the past. Or each letter you read is in the past.

So how a present moment can be there..?

Or is it based on the perception..?

Somewhere I read like the “shortest time a human can perceive is nearly 0.1 second of visual experience”.

So can the 0.1 second time-frame define the present?

I was having this past, present, future confusion since my childhood. While I am thinking, it’s just NOW. But oh, no. after a moment it has become past. ..What’s all this.. Makes me utterly confused.

🙁

I donno. Am I overthinking?

Or is it like “Present is boundary between past and future with no real existence of it’s own”

I think I need to investigate more on time, more on Einstein’s relativity of space and time.

Well my friend, there are papers published on the facts that u are stating, and its not just the reading thing, even the sounds we here, and things we feel were all that happened in past…:) we are all dwellers of past, but that gap is too small. Living in present is an underrated statement, it means a lot more than what you said…:)

No matter how you try to make sense of the line, every point is equally past, present, and future. Since this is ridiculous, we may as well say that there is no true past, present, or future.

        1. Everything comes down to Cause & Effect. Everything is based on the past, and everything effects the future. Everything is both a Cause and an Effect.

        2. The future is set. Free will does exist, but only as an illusion. Every decision you make is actually dependant on Causes from the past. Your frame of mind leading up to the decision is effected by what happened to you in the day leading up to it, your past experiences are going to guide you in making any decision, the exact position and angle that you observe external stimulus from, and on and on into factors that none of us would ever believe could be significant enough to make a perceivable difference. Whatever you believe, the fact is that you were always going to make that particular decision at that particular time. You may change your mind 10 seconds later, but you were always going to do that too.

        3. The past and future dont physically exist. Matter only exists in the present. If time travel is possible, its only through non-physical means (Im only 99.9999999% sure that phychics are all full of ***). You may also be able to create the illusion of time travel to the future by putting your physical body into a temporarily static state, but youll never physically be able to wink in and out of existance at different points in time.

        4. There may be some special start and end points to time where theyre just a Cause or just an Effect, but I think it may be more likely that time is circular and everything will just lead us back to the same point again. If there was a big bang to create our universe, then whatever ends it will cause another big bang (so points 1 & 2 still hold).

I liked your view that time is circular and everything will just lead us back to the same point again. I also used to think like whether time is moving from future to past ..

It’s hard to state what time exactly is,but isn’t it difficult to exactly define what is past, present and future..but somewhere some people try to be in past to undo mistakes and some in the future about what challenges they might face and few live in present dealing with step by step.

This aspect of existence, you have to explore yourself. Trust me, there will always be many explanations and people will convince you this is correct and that is not, but again , all are mere individual perceptions. Once you start this journey to explore the ‘dimensions’ of life, you will know. It’s something you have to experience and feel, within. The soul will guide you when you are prepared to do so. 🙂

Actually there is nothing called ‘now’ because by the time we think it is now.. the moment technically becomes the past.. As somebody above said there are lots written on it.

But the statement about living in the present I think applies to people who think of living at a future time, say after retirement! And by doing so forgets to enjoy life as they live.. Same goes for the past .. Some people just cannot let go of something that happened in their past and forget to enjoy as they live..

Present is something we enjoy the present moment, even though we have seen repeated words! it’s a chance to correct our past and making it better in present. Future is something we believe on ourselves to makes it perfect! past is experience, present is chance to make our perfect, future is what we create with external force and luck!

great post… I am now wondering what I will say next. Waiting for the moment to arrive is difficult…think of reaching out and grabbing it…. there! As soon as the thought pops into being it is gone.

In wide terms of reference, general terms apply but are not calibrated to segments of time, because the human brain is not evolved to the point of cognizance. 🙂

I have to stop writing now because in the very near future I have to leave the house to drive into the city … I will be back later (later–there’s an obscure point–technically it IS now “later…”) I wonder what I will say when later comes…if anything. 🙂

(Here’s what I wrote while waiting for my son.) ” I took a photo a few minutes ago, and I will take another in an hour. Both snapshots could be labeled ‘NOW’ because it was snapped instantly and captured the shot as it was…with light variances of time. SO, if an hour has passed it is still–or again–NOW–in the pictures. However: study the two prints of the snapshots side by side: each will be very different, depending on light conditions and shadow, and the precise holding and processing by the photographer. This is relativity.” I love this sort of thing, and often wish I could be at an intelligence level where I could actually understand it! 🙂 In fact, I really DID take some photos, and I’ll blog about it.

I think rather than trying to understand the thin difference between present, past and future, we focus on larger scheme of things…as in moments which make you happy, peaceful and contented. Learning from your past or present and meaningfully utilizing the opportunities that future( near one or a little far :)) offers can help one lead a happy life.

Very extraordinary thinking, Akhila. I like to interpret this concept both in a scientific and philosophical way. This is what Einstein’s theory of relativity all about. What a phenomenal scientist he was who brought phenomenal concepts to the world of illusions.
When the object is in motion, it experiences time delay. say, if you are travelling in a car, the time shown by your clock is different from the one who is at rest. But the variations are very minute which human can’t notice. This is the very first thing to be understood and known to realize the word “illusion”. We can actually travel time by using the legend’s theory.
Everything is explained in terms of light since it is the fastest. When we travel at the speed of light or as like light, we can actually travel time.
we are in the same medium and we all experience the same delay. Hence it becomes unnoticed. 🙂
Philosophically, it all depends on the eye that we see. The things that we once considered awesome, soon vanish and develop hatred and aversion. Whom to blame? Time or the eye? It is all an illusion. We can’t even rely on eyes, them whom else? Wow! You made me to think!
Keep thinking pensively and bring a discussion over here as like this piece 🙂 and thank you for this awesome thought.

For many a time, I have thought how would be the world without time?! Though it is illusion, the world craves for it. Many just yearn for that last second to survive, to win, to prove ,to apologize… How can illusion be such irresistible? Give some thought.

I also like to add a point that satellites are launched with time delay in order to match the earth’s time. Satellites are very implicative and covers wide range of applications. In such a case, we can infer that each and everything is delayed around us. Equalization of delay occurs and hence we all experience a normal life. Based on this situation, we classify it past, present and future. Though it is an illusion, we made it for a normal living.
And you know what, after I read your post, I’m kept on thinking it. Thanks a lot.

I think, there is no limit for precision.. It is infinite..One cannot pin point a boundary. All measuring instruments will have a defined accuracy. Similarly, human brain can have its own limitations beyond which it cannot think. We cannot exactly say this is correct or that is correct.

Every breath, the things we are currently seeing, hearing, sense of touch – this is now. As you hold a pen or take a deep breath or read something on your computer screen -its all happening in the moment. The decisions we take in this ‘moment’ shapes our future. Every present was once past. And every future will be present one day.
Have you read the book ‘power of now’ aks? The author says instead of doing something in subconscious pay attention to what you do.

The entity ‘now’ depends on the quanta of time you consider. This second, this minute, this hour, this day, this week… 🙂 When you say, ‘I want it now’, it has to be made clear with a quanta. Also you need to specify either the start or end point too. Like when this hour starts, 2:25, 2:30, or it already started at 2..
Live in the present means the same. Do what you feel like doing right now, not thinking how it might affect some time later. Take rest for this hour, and get the wrath from boss the next hour. 😛 These kind of thoughts are fascinating. I like the way you write about it. I mean, these thoughts takes us nowhere, just leave us in awe!
I love physics. If my love for programming hadn’t overtaken it, I’d have finished my masters in physics by now. 😀 Now as in this year. 😀

Present can be never felt…… But the moment it was present or is present decides our past and future…. So it is like be aware of each second or millisecond and let no thought, thing, person influence our real self… This is what I have got to learn on the journey of life.

Hehehe… what is this ? You science headed, how could you confuse people like me 😛 Well, now is now even if its of 0.1 secs or whatever and yes, what i believe is a very subtle difference between past, present and future. The catch is to worry less of past and future and live and focus what one is doing at the present.

The smallest unit of time is Planck Time. Which is 10^-44 secs or 1/10^44. That could be called the present. I mean on Earth we divide our clocks on 24 hour basis. So, the least we keep track of is 1 sec in our daily lives. Maybe we are still susceptible to millisecond phenomena, however, beyond a certain time limit we seldom observe the change around us. Possibly not. The scale of which the perception of the macroworld happens could be a change of millisecond. What we call present is the moment you stop and realize…THIS! and its gone…:D

What I really think is .. in terms of a common man… the present depends on human perception as you know when under the influence on dome recreational drug human perceive their ambience with a lag. And if some visual stimulus reaches or brain .5 seconds later we react .5 seconds later only.
        So what is now???
Now is when you perceive things that are happening around it in a continuum as it is the only phenomenon of time to which your body can react.
Now the theory of relativity takes it to the whole new level and the incident t=0 sec. happens only once as it is a pinpoint event in any scientific process and it unique and same for everyone.
THE TERM ‘NOW’ IS RELATIVE TO DIFFRETN INDIVUALS!

Just random thoughts spilt on screen!
Pardon for any flawed interpretation but what’s your ultimate conclusion?

Wow – you have really hit this hard – I never thought of time this way, but agree with you that every moment that moment is becoming past and the next moment, future. This makes time unreachable, incomprehensible and uncatchable. Pardon my English… but just couldn’t find words to express how the post made me feel.

Wow… These thoughts you are having are very similar to the ones I have very often about our lives in general.. How relative our way of seeing things is compared to our reality.. So I’m very glad to find someone who thinks so similarly! 🙂 If you’re interested in these kinds of issues, I would recommend you start watching a youtuber called Vsauce… He ponders all kinds of “crazy” but true theories.. For example did you know physics says you can’t actaully touch anything?? When you touch something, the electrons within your body are repelling the electrons that make up the item your are touching, so you are hovering above it by a unfathomably small distance. These are the kinds of issues Vsauce takes on. Anyway, thanks for the great post!

          November 6, 2016 at 12:55pm

Yes it is quite odd.. 😛 The way I see it its purely physically… Whenever something touches your feet the neurons from the cells of your feet transmit an electrical signal to your brain.. This signal like anything else has to travel the distance before it gets to the brain.. So the taller you are the larger the distance so the slower your brain will get the message that you have been touched.. Of course the difference is so small that it is not noticeable and also this only applies to the feet.. If we were talking about a touch on the head then there would be no difference at all.. Anyway I hope my monologue wasn’t too boring :P… I’m glad you enjoyed the video and I hope for more posts like this one 🙂

I just want to answer this in spiritual way, maybe for something’s,science can’t answer.see what you said was exactly right.past doesn’t exist, and future doesn’t exist..both are not in our hands..it’s like a river flow..both are time factors..and in seconds future become present and present became past..soo what really exists???? You have to think deep..for this question..some say it’s your soul using your body as tool.and some say god it’s the thing you have to figure out. Who are you and why on earth

May be I have answer for that flower thing, when you fast forward our life, same thing happens, why we are Born and why we are dying.AND WHAT ABOUT VIRUS AND BACTERIA?..They live for a week and give us fever and flus and die.actually these living beings have no meaning at all,and their consciousness is not enough to find the meaning.Only humans have that power. Based on karma we do,we take different bodies ,it may be from microscopic virus to gigantic elephants and human. And why flower bloom.. may be because of honey bees,or may be because of insects, maybe because of pollination of plants.Everything in this universe is inter related.Something like butterfly effect.everything has a reason. There is a reason why something is born and why something’s are dying..

I can understand what you are telling.. but it didn’t answer me… why am I living, …. to support others, to make myself happy, whatever may be that, again there is a why… if I were to die on a day, why am I alive today.. what’s the ultimate intention.. what am I gaining or losing..if there is nothing, again why am I alive.. I Donno if you can perceive what I am telling..

That’s what I told..karma.This may be not scientific but listen.we are all trapped in cycle of this birth and death.maybe in some past life you have done some deeds.when you do something, you have to definitely eat the fruits of your action.whether good or bad.soo based on that calculations you are here. But you don’t know why you are here and who you are. That you have to find out.And if you again desire something, you again do some action and again karma and trapped in the cycle of births and deaths..you have to get freed from these desires at some point of life. You asked me why you are living?? Well, even I am searching for that answer..soo I can’t answer you..no one cant answer you..The day you got the answer..you will experience eternal bliss.because you have nothing to lose or nothing to gain..EMOTIONLESS…SAINT..PEACE..FREEDOM FROM ALL WANTINGS.
