Rocketry: The Nambi Effect
Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, a film on Nambi Narayanan, starring and directed by R Madhavan was released in July 2022.
It is a shocking story of a great ISRO Scientist who had to suffer for years due to false charges.
A movie which traces the life of aerospace and cryogenic scientist Nambi Narayanan Sir.
There are many gut-wrenching scenes in the movie and obviously many more should have happened in his real life than what is shown in the film.
The movie was shot in India, France, Canada, Georgia and Serbia..
It is a must watch for all Indians
The movie can give you goosebumps especially if you concentrate on the timeline of events. Our scientists at ISRO were building such a great foundation for space research and technology, that too under many constraints and limitations of that time.
Nambi Sir was a scientist of great caliber and extraordinary talents who was even invited to join NASA. And he declined the offer only because of his love for the nation. Such a hardcore patriotic man was arrested under false charges of espionage.
As far as I understand the movie is concentrating on two subject matters.
Obviously the story portrays his long struggle against a falsely cooked-up spy case. And secondly
the movie shows you who Nambi Narayanan is beyond all these spy scandals.
He came into the limelight in 1994 when he was arrested
In fact before the movie, I just knew about the person.. just knew, that’s all..When the news came, it was really shocking to read how much a man can bear.. His struggles of nearly 20 plus years..
‘An innocent ISRO scientist framed as a traitor’. So until I watched this movie last week, my only point of understanding about him was this much. But the movie literally opened my eyes.
‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ made me understand who he really is
After this movie only I came to know about his experiments, contributions to the nation and his vision of making India. He is the inventor of Vikas rocket engine which is still in use and is the only one which has to be used in every single satellite or rocket launching.
In schools we are taught about Vikram Sarabhai and many other great names. But no where taught about this person. And I wonder if all this humiliation hadn’t happened, probably he would have been the soul of many more great experiments and space expeditions. And our kids would have been learning the name of Nambi Narayan Sir as a part of their studies. He was such a great man of passion and enthusiasm!!
A man of sharpness and focus who never gives up
A man of sharpness and focus who had worked his heart out for making the country at the zenith of space technology!!
But what he got in return were false charges, police thrashing and public antagonism. He was so ill-treated and disrespected for the espionage case. But he never gave up. He fought a legal battle to clear his name and it continued for 20 + years. Finally he won!!
He was honored with the Padma Bhushan in 2019 and was financially compensated for the trauma he had to endure.
But a few questions still remain..Who is the real culprit and how/why Nambi Sir got framed into this..? Are the culprits within or outside..?
What the movie brings out
R Madhavan has lived the character of Nambi Sir and kudos to his direction of the movie. Thank you so much Ji for bringing Nambi Sir’s struggling and inspiring life journey on the big screen. You did an amazing job!! Hats off to you!!
- How great legend he was and what we, Indians really missed/undervalued
- A man, looking forward even after so much trauma in the past, even after losing several decades of the most productive part of his life
- A hardcore patriot
- Self confident and strong willed person who is challenging the stereotypes and making the impossible possible.
- The extraordinary talented team of Indian space research which includes Vikram Sarabhai, Satish Dawan, Abdul Kalam and many more.
Thank you to the Rocketry Team
As always I used to say, I’m not saying anything on the technical side of the movie.. If I enjoyed the movie, that itself says it all. So I really loved this movie.
Salute to the genius Nambi Naryanan Sir and his family.
Proud of Madhavan for his Efforts and love for the Nation to bring out the truth on the Great Nambi Narayanan sir.
Thank you to the entire Rocketry Team!!

This is a very detailed review of the movie Akhila..you introduced me to a man with honor and great love for his country.
Well.. thanks for reading Mich…
Great and Succinct review ! I sincerely appreciate the intentions of Madhavan in making a film about the contributions of an ill treated great scientist . Though I have some criticism to point out : Some of the scenes were overly melodramatic (typical tamil fare) and it felt like the director wanted no stones unturned in making the audience feel the agony of the protagonist. The way in which Nambi Narayan’s involvement in the Vikas Rocket development also felt like it was a one man show all the way with rest of the scientists having no clue as to how to proceed and looking up to Nambi for enlightenment . Vikas had the contributions of many Indian scientists who worked hard for it and sadly the movie completely forgets that in its efforts to glorify Nambi Narayan. The movie seems to be entirely dependent upon the Nambi Narayans Autobiography and personal interviews with him and doesn’t seem to have consulted other people who were involved . So what we are left with is a very narrow perspective of the events that unfolded and overtly relying of emotional pull ..
Yes.. there is a one man show perspective appearing in the movie..
actually i read in hindu that Nambi narayanan wanted the movie focus mainly on his long struggle… but it was Madhavan who wanted to focus it on his achievements too in addition to the sufferings..
thank you for your views Ramnath ..
